We are not issuing a “blank check” on the form of the European integration core
Bratislava, 31.07.2017
State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Ivan Korčok, was on a working visit in Paris yesterday (21 July 2017) and held talks with Nathalie Loiseau, Minister for European Affairs, Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs of the Republic of France, and Philippe Etienne, advisor to the French President. The deliberations confirmed the countries’ joint interest in further developing bilateral cooperation between Slovakia and France. Next year will be important for both countries in commemorating events relevant to the two countries, inter alia, 100 years since the end of World War I and the essential role of France in the foundation of the Czechoslovak Republic in 1918. "Commemorating historical events is not just about symbols. If we want to find answers to contemporary challenges we have to remember the reasons for and values upon which the idea of integration came into existence. Its roots dwell in the tragedies of the 20th century. I believe the symbolical year ending with an “eight” is just as important to France as it is to Slovakia and will bring us even closer together and give us the resolve to do within the EU what it needs most right now, meaning recovering the trust from our citizens,” noted the state secretary on this occasion. The future of the EU was the most important theme of the discussions in the Elysee Palace as well as at the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. "The new French administration is strongly determined to fundamentally influence the direction of the discussions concerning the future of the EU. Slovakia is forming its own opinion. Just like everyone else within the EU we also will seek to pursue the most out of our own ideas. They are shared in many respects but that by far does not mean that they are altogether fully identical. Slovakia is ready for more profound integration everywhere it will bring added value to us and the entire EU. But we are not issuing a blank check to the idea of a core. We say that we want to influence the debate, we want to have a say in important decisions rather than be just a passive observer. This holds especially about the future form of the Eurozone where, I have no doubt, Finance Minister Peter Kažimír will be significantly present in the European-level discussions,” noted State Secretary Korčok while in Paris. odkaz na stránku
