On 16 May 2018, Lukáš Parízek, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic held bilateral political consultations with an Indian delegation led by the Minister of State for External Affairs Mobashar Jawed Akbar.
The partners appreciated an excellent level of bilateral relations, talked about the prospects of their further development and agreed on the need to regularly conduct bilateral consultations.
In addition to economic issues and the need for a more active engagement of Slovak business entities in projects of economic cooperation, the negotiations focused on issues related to the upcoming high-level visits, mutual support of candidacies in international organisations, contractual bases and current multilateral and regional issues.
The consultations confirmed a high potential for enhancement of cooperation in the areas of IT, traffic management systems, the pharmaceutical industry, robotics and railway transport. Collaboration has been more active in the area of the defence industry since India liberalized conditions for the engagement of the private sector in the armaments industry in 2017. Parízek stated that “the Slovak Republic has long-term expertise and innovative technological processes in defence manufacturing, and logistics together with ‘specialized superstructure production is’ is one of its strengths”.
Both parties agreed that investments into the construction of the Jaguar Land Rover plant next to the town of Nitra, which is part of a conglomerate belonging to the Indian Tata Group, is a positive signal for Indian entrepreneurs. The opening of a branch of Tata Consultancy Services in Bratislava means momentum for the establishment of further Indian investments and business entities.
During their stay in the Slovak Republic, the Indian delegation visited the international fair on defence and security technology, IDEB 2018.
For the Slovak Republic, India is the fifth most important export market in Asia. Trade turnover in 2017 reached EUR 333.2 million; exports from the Slovak Republic exceeded EUR 50 million.
