Lajčák unveils bust of Woodrow Wilson at Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry
Bratislava, 22.05.2018
People tend to assign symbols to significant historical events or milestones. Looking one hundred years back, it can be said with certainty that one of the symbols of Slovak-American friendship is the legacy of President Thomas Woodrow Wilson whose visions for peace, support of free trade and open diplomacy based on equal respect to all nations regardless of their size contributed also to the birth of an independent and democratic Czechoslovakia. This was said today (18 May) by Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, during the unveiling ceremony for a bust of the 28th US President, Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924), when delivering his remarks at the Palugyay Palace Courtyard in the premises of the Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry. “Principles that Wilson believed in 100 years ago, such as the right of nations to self-determination, territorial integrity or compliance with international law remain relevant also today. What used to be Wilson’s visionary approach is today a global imperative. Unfortunately, in many cases, a very tested imperative,” said Lajčák who recapped that 2018 is a year of historical milestones, milestones that have been key for Slovakia’s fate. “On the way to an independent state of Czechs and Slovaks, a decisive role was undoubtedly also played by the friendly relations between Woodrow Wilson and Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk who described the mutual friendship with the American people as follows: “Do not forget that we are forever connected with the same values, the same principles. Do not forget us and we will never forget you!” “It is extraordinary that a century later – today – is again the day of acknowledgement of the quality of our mutual relations based on the same, still valid values and principles. Even 100 years later, we have not forgotten in Bratislava. This bust is a proof of it,” added Minister Lajčák. Unveiling of the bust of Woodrow Wilson, created by academic sculptor Vít Bojňanský took place as part of events commemorating the centenary of establishment of the joint state of Czechs and Slovaks as well as the 25th anniversary of the independent Slovak Republic and establishment of Slovak-American diplomatic relations. US Ambassador to Slovakia, Adam Sterling, helped unveil the bust. The event was attended by several dozen invited guests. odkaz na stránku
