Bratislava, 18.06.2018 |
|
On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Slovakia joining the Council of Europe and also the 20th anniversary of the membership of the Slovak Republic in the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB), the 53rd joint meeting of CEB bodies was held today (15 June) in Bratislava.
Lukáš Parízek, State Secretary of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, delivered his opening remarks, recalling: “Anniversaries give us an opportunity to reflect on Slovakia’s success stories in the past two decades as well as to show our gratitude for both institutions’ outstanding contribution to the strengthening of democracy, the rule of law and protection of human rights in the Slovak Republic.”
Since 1998, CEB has approved funding for 23 projects in the Slovak Republic, amounting to 1.2 billion euros. CEB focuses on the financing of SMEs with the aim to support the creating and maintaining of jobs, modernisation of municipal and rural areas, environmental protection and fighting climate change, and housing schemes via the Slovak Government and State Housing Development Fund, education and research.
State Secretary Parízek also presented the activities of the Slovak Inclusive Growth Account (SIGA), the aim of which is to provide funding for technical assistance for CEB target countries, particularly to countries eligible for Official Development Assistance (ODA). This is how Slovakia contributes to achieving sustainable development goals while utilizing its own experience, and also to achieving the CEB goal to support inclusive development and environmental sustainability. Gradually, Slovakia is becoming a contributing, rather than just a receiving, country of the Council of Europe.
