People in Estonia are electing a new parliament
Talin, 04.03.2007
People in Estonia are electing a new parliament. For the first time, ballots can be cast on the Internet. 101 parliamentary seats are being contested by 970 candidates from 11 parties, among them the ethnic Russian Constitutional Party and the Russian Party of Estonia, as well as 7 independent candidates. Campaigning was marred by controversy over the destiny of a monument to the Soviet Soldier-Liberator in the capital Tallinn with nationalist parties pushing for the adoption of laws providing for the dismantling of the monument and the reburial of the remains of Soviet soldiers reposing in a nearby tomb. The Estonian Russian-speakers regard these plans as an attempted revision of history and heroization of Nazism. www.ruvr.ru 04.03.2007
