Brussels, 22.11.2018 |
|
Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, held talks with Federica Mogherini, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, in Brussels today (19 November 2018) before the Foreign Affairs Council. During their discussions they focused on Slovakia’s upcoming Chairmanship of the OSCE. Lajčák explained Slovakia’s priorities to the High Representative and outlined opportunities for a close cooperation of this organization with the EU, especially regarding projects aimed at improving the lives of people most affected by conflicts in the OSCE region. They agreed that such cooperation is much needed, and both parties will prepare a detailed framework for activities in this area. “The EU and OSCE agreed on a closer cooperation in June this year. Putting this agreement in practice is definitely in the interest of both organizations. We want to work out this cooperation in concrete joint activities,” stated Minister Lajčák.
The two diplomats also delved into developments in the Western Balkans. In this regard the head of Slovak diplomacy stated that the EU should play a more active role in the region and react responsibly to these countries which meet their commitments in the accession process, especially when addressing their requirements. “Slovakia endorses the EU enlargement process vis-à-vis the countries meeting the agreed conditions and criteria," stated Lajčák.
They also talked about the Global Migration Compact since this topic resonates in Europe, including Slovakia. The EU played an important role in agreeing on the wording of this document. All the objections by the EU including Slovakia have been taken into consideration in its text. “We are not pleased that this topic is misused by populists, xenophobes, nationalists, who spread misunderstandings and falsehoods about this document in order to increase their own popularity in this harmful way,” stated the head of Slovak diplomacy.
