Vienna, 16.01.2019 |

During his working visit to the Republic of Austria, Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, held talks with Karin Kneissl, Austria’s Federal Minister for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs, today (14 January 2019). Their talks were dominated by issues concerning bilateral cooperation, the current European agenda including the evaluation of Austria’s Presidency of the Council of the EU, as well as Slovakia’s OSCE Chairmanship.
They discussed bilateral priorities with a focus on cross-border cooperation and joint infrastructure projects. They deemed the mutual neighborhood relations be very good and constructive, which is clearly reflected by the extraordinary intensity of high-level contacts in the recent period. “Austria has been one of our key economic partners and the second biggest investor in Slovakia. Our relations are bilaterally beneficial, and it is necessary to continue with this trend,” emphasized the Slovak Minister.
“I appreciate our cooperation with Austria in the OSCE. We would like to continue with Austria’s efforts during its Presidency of the Council of the EU with regard to the implementation of the agreement on the cooperation between the OSCE and EU in the atmosphere of effective multilateralism, which is one of the priorities of our OSCE Chairmanship,” stated Lajčák. He also said that the biggest challenge for Slovakia’s Presidency will be the conflict in and around Ukraine, which was also discussed during the talks today.
Minister Lajčák told his counterpart about the priorities and the planned activities for the second half of the Slovakia’s V4 Presidency, stressing that several topics of the Austria’s Presidency of the Council of the EU were in harmony with the priorities of Slovakia’s V4 Presidency, including external aspects of migration, EU enlargement and digitalization.
The two parties stated that their standpoints are same also concerning Brexit. “If the United Kingdom of Great Britain and the Northern Ireland definitively decides it does not want to stay in the EU, then an orderly withdrawal would be the best alternative. I believe that London also thinks in the same direction and that pragmatism and common sense will win at the end of the day,” stated Lajčák.
