On 4 February 2019, Lukáš Parízek, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic received Roman Vasilenko, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, who is taking part in the OSCE Conference on Combating Anti-Semitism in the OSCE Region. The mentioned conference is one of the first top-level events organised under the umbrella of the Slovak OSCE chairmanship.
Lukáš Parízek and Roman Vasilenko both confirmed a very good level of bilateral relations. Parízek concluded that political changes in the region of Central Asia have had a positive impact. The partners assessed that the meeting of the Inter-Governmental Commission for Economic Cooperation was a positive impulse of cooperation in the area of economy and trade last year. Especially important was the business mission of the Slovak Republic which visited Astana in November 2018. The meeting was a confirmation of the interest of both countries in exchanging experience and enhancing cooperation in the automotive, pharmaceutical and food-processing industries. The active collaboration of the two countries’ institutions specialized in water resource management is one example of successful cooperation so far.
As a positive example of the Slovak-Kazakh trade cooperation, Roman Vasilenko described the launching of the solar power plant project at a value of EUR 130 million.
With regards to the upcoming Slovak Chairmanship in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), Parízek welcomed Kazakhstan’s engagement in multilateral forums and in seeking solutions to the current international challenges. When discussing the OSCE themes, the partners focused on the possibilities of cooperation in the economic and environmental side of the organisation where Kazakhstan plays a key role with its innovative approaches.
“Slovak diplomacy supports dialogue, peaceful conflict solutions, and the de-escalation of tensions between countries both in the regional and in the global dimension,” emphasized Parízek. The current developments in the region of Central Asia and the conflicts in Syria and the East of the Ukraine were also part of the agenda of the working meeting.
The partners discussed possible collaboration in the area of development aid allocation, where Kazakhstan is interested in the Slovak experience. In this regard, Roman Vasilenko said that Kazakhstan provided development aid to Afghanistan in the amount of USD 50 million for an educational programme for Afghan students as well as an educational programme for the Afghan students with the support of Uzbekistan and the EU.
