The Implementation of the Paris Agreement is Opportunity for Development of Technology Innovation and Jobs Creation |
Bratislava, 29.03.2019 |

From the point of meeting the commitments of the Paris Climate Agreement, the key activity of the European Union is currently to prepare the Long-Term Strategy for the Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 2050. In parallel, the Slovak Republic is at present preparing its own long-term strategy, also working with the 2050 perspective. The issue of European and global activities in the fight against climate change was also tackled during the meeting of František Ružička, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, and Raffaele Mauro Petriccione, Director-General at the Directorate-General for Climate Action of the European Commission, held on 27 March 2019.
The State Secretary’s main message was that “the EU should maintain its position of leadership in the fight against climate change. The implementation of the Paris Agreement is an opportunity for the development of technology innovation and jobs creation. However, meeting the objectives of the Agreement will require supportive measures and extensive investments in the most affected sectors of the economy and regions.” It is of special importance for the Slovak Republic that the specificities of the national situation are considered in the efforts to achieve the so-called climate neutral economy. “We have our own experiences with gradual carbon removal. Thus we must allocate sufficient time for the regions and their people to adapt to the new reality,” added the State Secretary.
At the same time Ružička also drew attention to the preparation of the long-term industrial strategy beyond 2030. “We need to guarantee that the EU preserves its important position globally with regard to industrial policy. For Slovakia this is of key significance for our automotive industry and the various related sectors of the industry. Therefore, the long-term strategy must be in line with other strategies and policies in the EU,” added Ružička. The adoption and realization of the low-carbon strategy itself will require the involvement of all sectors of society, including the state administration, as well as local administrations, not to mention the ecologically-responsible behavior of individuals. This reality is also reflected in the Environmental Strategy of the Slovak Republic by 2030, which was recently adopted by the Government of the Slovak Republic under the name “Greener Slovakia”.
