Lajčák Talks with European Ambassadors |
Bratislava, 24.10.2019 |
|
The Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Miroslav Lajčák, attended today (18 October 2019) a meeting with the ambassadors from the European Union countries who are assigned to the Slovak Republic, which was, in line with the current Presidency of the Council of the European Union, organized by the Ambassador of Finland Jukka Uolevi Pesola. The discussion focused on current European and international topics, which at present dominate the European week in Brussels, where the most anticipated event was the announcement of the outcome of the Brexit negotiations. In this regard Lajčák highlighted the agreement that was reached and its adoption by European leaders yesterday, and expressed the hope that it would also be adopted by British MPs. “Slovakia has since the beginning supported the efforts to achieve a compromise solution, when every party has to make certain concessions, since the no-deal withdrawal from the EU would be the worst possibility. This is a good basis for talks about future relations,” added the Minister. The chief Slovak diplomat expressed deep disappointment over the failure to open accession talks with North Macedonia and Albania, although the required conditions were met. “It is sad when the European Union refuses to make use of its best tool to positively influence the development in our nearest neighborhood. We are changing the rules of the game, and thus losing our credibility, which we consider to be a strategic mistake on the part of the EU,” stated Lajčák. The EU Ambassadors and the Minister also discussed Turkey, whose activity in the exclusive economic zone of Cyprus and in the northeast of Syria were unanimously condemned by all member states. “The Slovak Republic joins the common EU activities and will not issue new licenses for the export of guns to Turkey,” the Minister stated, thus introducing the decision of Peter Pellegrini, Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic. The discussion was also about the multiannual financial framework for 2021-2027, the allocation of which should be sufficient to finance all the priorities to which the leaders committed at the summit in Sibiu, as well as in the adopted Strategic Agenda. “For the Slovak Republic, an adequate allocation for the Cohesion Policy and the Common Agriculture Policy is one of the convergence instruments of our regions, as well as fair conditions for our farmers,” stated the Minister. He also talked with the Ambassadors about the need for global engagement in the fight against climate change, as well as the leadership role of the EU. “The Slovak Republic is ready to adopt the commitment to reach carbon neutrality by 2050 at the December summit,” said the Minister. Lajčák as the Chairperson-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) informed the Ambassadors about the existing course and successes of Slovakia’s OSCE Chairmanship, as well as the preparation of the annual OSCE Ministerial Council to be held in Bratislava on 5-6 December 2019.
