Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic delivered his remarks as one of the speakers in the panel discussion The State of the World: Quo Vadis? at the 50th meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos. The panellists presented their positions on the current economic uncertainty in the world, which has been influenced by recent geopolitical developments. In line with the mentioned theme, Miroslav Lajčák in his remarks focused on the roles that Europe should play in the process of creating a new world order, including innovations, leadership and establishing necessary standards.
Later Miroslav Lajčák moderated a discussion in the panel A Diplomatic Dialogue in the Western Balkans in his role as a co-chair together with the WEF President Børge Brend. The discussion focused primarily on the continuation of a strategic dialogue in the Western Balkans – one of the key initiatives of the WEF programmes in Europe. Minister Lajčák co-chairs the WEF Global Future Council on Europe, which is a discussion platform for leaders on the future direction and priorities of the European Union and the European continent as such. He spoke about the process of improving regional cooperation and the better use of opportunities with regards to the transformation of the economic environment for the benefit of the Western Balkans. As an internationally recognized expert on the region, he recalled the importance of political stability as a factor which significantly influences the development of the economy in the region. At the same time, he expressed his belief that the only possible and correct way forward is to continue with the EU enlargement process, and the sooner, the better for all parties concerned.
Together with other participants at the forum, the chief Slovak diplomat listened to the speech of the US President Donald Trump and took part in two bilateral meetings. With Joy Collins, Vice-President of the Citibank Group, he talked about the impact of the introduction of digital financial technologies for the implementation of sustainable goals. During his meeting with the representative of the PMI company, he talked about the engagement of multinational companies in the process of the implementation of Agenda 2030.
