|
Miroslav Lajčák, Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic received 19.02.2020 Jillian Stirk, Head of the ODIHR EAM (Election Assessment Mission of the Organisation for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights) of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and the members of EAM, as they arrived in Slovakia to begin their mission.
The eight-member election assessment mission arrived in Slovakia on February 17, 2020. They will be assessing the preparations and the course of general elections in the Slovak Republic and its compliance with its international obligations and the principles of the rule of law. They will also pay attention to the implementation of the election laws and regulations, as well as to the balance in and the independence of the media environment. Within two months from the election date, the EAM will publish its evaluation report, which will include the recommendations of the ODIHR, if any, for the removal of whatever flaws they might potentially identify.
“As a former Chairperson-in-Office of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, I highly appreciate the long-term monitoring expertise of the OSCE. The Slovak Republic will continue to protect and support the implementation processes related to these activities which are needed in order to strengthen the democratic nature of society. Moreover, Slovakia will further actively cooperate with the OSCE’s Organisation for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights with regards to the implementation of recommendations aimed at improving the election process,” stated Miroslav Lajčák.
