Minister Lajcak Will Probably Return to Brussels to Work for EU |
Bratislava, 11.03.2020 |
|
When I leave the post of the Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister, I’ll probably return to Brussels to work for the European Union (EU), said Miroslav Lajcak (a Smer-SD nominee) on Tuesday.
“At the moment it looks like this – just as I came back from Brussels, where I worked for the EU, to a ministerial post in 2012, now I’ll return to Brussels, to the EU, eight years later,” Lajcak told Tablet.TV, adding that he’s received several interesting job offers.
“I’ve been saying all along that I’m a diplomat borrowed for politics, so now I’m in fact returning to what is the closest to me – i.e. diplomacy, which fulfils me,” stated Lajcak.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic in an interview for Serbian daily Blic in February didn’t rule out the possibility that Lajcak could become the EU’s mediator for dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina.
The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell has proposed creating the post of EU special envoy for the Western Balkans. However, chief spokesperson for EU foreign affairs and security policy Peter Stano didn’t want to comment on Lajcak’s potential nomination for this post at the moment, as Borrell’s proposal is still subject to approval by EU-member states.
