The unpopular decisions we make today can bring us more freedom in the coming weeks or months
Bratislava, 14.11.2020
“The COVID-19 pandemic is both a challenge and an opportunity. We have a chance to show mutual solidarity and heal the old wounds of our economies. Slovakia supports a coordinated approach and the sharing of experience within the European Union in the fight against the coronavirus. No country will win this match alone, and so we must join forces. Slovakia is ready to share its experience from the mass testing with our EU partners.” This was announced by the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Martin Klus, on Wednesday, 11 November 2020, during an online meeting with representatives of the European Court of Auditors. This independent institution, which is based in Luxembourg, monitors that the public funds of the EU are used responsibly, efficiently, and transparently. State Secretary Martin Klus was the first representative of the executive branch of an EU Member State to be chosen by the representatives of one of the colleges of the Court of Auditors for this format of discussion. They focused mainly on Slovakia’s experience in combating the spread of COVID-19. Martin Klus, State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, described the situation to his partners as follows: “We have completed several rounds of testing for our population with antigen tests, both in the most affected regions and in the country as a whole. The “Joint Responsibility” operation, coordinated by the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic, involved local governments, medical staff, firefighters, police officers and volunteers. In total, more than 50,000 people worked in the teams carrying out the testing.” He added that it was the mass testing that made it possible to map the epidemiological situation in Slovakia in more detail and identify the so-called hidden outbreaks, and thus better decide on the future measures. By contrast, a negative side effect of the Slovak fight against the coronavirus is the spread of misinformation and hate speech, which affects every area of our lives, including public health. “If we want to successfully fight false and hateful news or dangerous lies on the Internet, we need to act together. Efficient communication with citizens must be an important part of our testing and vaccination strategies. The phenomenon of misinformation campaigns is still a big problem, especially in the countries of Central Europe,” Klus stated. With his partners, he also discussed the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. He further gave an account of the Slovak view on the future EU budget for 2021-2027, including the recovery plan, and relations with other important players of the global economy. At the end of the online meeting, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic expressed the hope that it will soon be possible to hold similar discussions with representatives of the European Court of Auditors in person in Luxembourg or in Slovakia. odkaz na stránku
