The Šariš Brewery in Veľký Šariš produced a record volume of malt in 2020.
Veľký Šariš, 02.02.2021
Despite the pandemic, COVID-19 operated in continuous operation. Last year, the brewery invested more than 850,000 euros in the 1981 malting plant. "Last year was a big test for the entire beer market. At Šariš Brewery, we managed to manage it thanks to the fact that we almost immediately introduced increased hygiene measures that protected our people and thanks to their discipline, production could take place without interruption. Last year was for us. We produced more than 19,200 tons of own malt from almost 25,000 tons of purchased malting barley, which is almost 2% more than in 2019, "said Martin Grygařík, Sales Director and Deputy Chairman of the Board of Plzeňský Prazdroj Slovensko, for TASR. As he said, they support the Slovak economy and farmers. "We take the whole necessary amount of barley only from domestic producers, mainly from the vicinity of Prešov, Michalovce, Poprad, Košice and also from the west of Slovakia according to varieties," Grygařík explained. Malting barley is one of the key raw materials for brewers, and they process the malt they use in Velký Šariš to brew beer in their own malting plant. "We only buy special malts from suppliers, such as caramel or colored. The volume of caramel malt purchased last year decreased by 12.5% compared to 2019 and 2018. In the case of colored malt, we do not record a decrease," added the sales director. The malting plant employs 19 people and has an average length of employment of 24 years. "It was built in 1981. Last year, more than 850,000 euros were reinvested in it, of which more than 550,000 euros went to a new barley sorter and another 300,000 euros were requested by green malt tedders. This investment results in an annual saving of 2.1 kilowatt hours (kWh) of energy per tonne of malt, which is 0.369 kilograms of CO2 emissions per tonne of processed malt, "added Grygařík. The Šariš Brewery employs a total of more than 300 people. In April 2019, they put into operation a modernized can line, the capacity of which increased by a third, to 22,000 hectoliters per week odkaz na stránku
