“Although it seems nowadays that we are submerged only in the crisis and the risks, these complicated times also give us an opportunity to think about things we could do differently, and better, in a more innovative, more digital and more ecological manner. And in this regard the cooperation between Slovakia and Germany can serve as an excellent example of how to do it.”
This was the statement of the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Martin Klus, in Bratislava on Thursday (28 January 2021) during his address in the context of the online networking of the Slovak-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK Slowakei).
The virtual event which was focused on the exchange of experiences and building new contacts was also attended by the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Slovak Republic, Barbara Wolf, together with representatives of German companies in Slovakia, successful entrepreneurs and investors in industry, commerce and services.
“Germany is our strategic ally and a partner, with which we share the values of liberal democracy and the rule of law. Our economic cooperation has long flourished as well. In 2019 the total turnover of our bilateral trade reached more than 30 billion EUR. Almost a fourth of the Slovak export and a sixth of our import is related to Germany, which is also one of the most important investors in Slovakia. Around 450 German companies employ almost 140 thousand people in Slovakia,” explained State Secretary of the Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Ministry Klus.
However, in 2020 the COVID-19 pandemic also negatively influenced the Slovak-German trade turnover. Therefore, Slovakia, as an open and export-oriented economy, would like to focus on minimizing the impact of the corona crisis, and in this regard the help and expertise of Germany are also welcome.
“We realize the importance of open borders, and not only for the further growth of the Slovak economy, but also for that of the entire EU, including Germany. It is in our interest to maintain cross-border movement and a functional single market. Other ways to address the present economic challenges are to improve the business environment and concentrate on innovations, for instance in cyber security in the automotive industry,” stated Klus.
He also added that in several areas Slovakia can, thanks to the many successful stories of scientists, businessmen or innovators, offer a lot to its foreign partners.
Since its foundation in 2005, the Slovak-German Chamber of Industry and Commerce (AHK Slowakei) has focused on supporting economic relations between Slovakia and Germany, especially through providing services for companies from both countries. It is part of the global network of more than 140 foreign offices of the German economy in more than 92 countries in the world.
