The State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic represented Slovakia at the International Conference in Support of the Lebanese People today (4 August 2021). The event, which was held at the initiative of France and the United Nations, took place symbolically on the day of the first anniversary of the disastrous explosion in the port of Beirut, Lebanon. “I’m proud that Slovakia was one of the first countries of the world that, immediately after the tragic explosion in the Beirut port on 4 August 2020, reacted and provided Lebanon with immediate assistance in the form of medical supplies and food in the amount of more than EUR 60 thousand. This strong gesture of solidarity, in which other Slovak ministries and non-governmental organizations participated as well, attested to the resolution and readiness of Slovakia to give its partners a helping hand in a crisis situation,” stated State Secretary Brocková in her address.
The conference focused on the critical humanitarian situation and the plan for providing further assistance to the people of Lebanon, which now faces the worst crisis in its history. The participants of the conference also discussed a new model for the sustainable economic and social development and the opportunities for the restoration of the port and the surrounding parts of Beirut, which were destroyed by the explosion. They agreed on the necessity of political stabilization, economic and political reforms in the country, as well the need for a coordinated approach of international organizations, governmental institutions and non-governmental stakeholders for the sake of the effective implementation of the international development assistance.
With the objective of helping people in need in Lebanon and supporting the stabilization and restoration of the country, the Slovak Republic has provided the country with humanitarian aid valued at more than EUR 740 thousand since August 2020. The State Secretary Brocková emphasized that the contribution is an important show of solidarity with the people suffering due to the crisis in Lebanon. This contribution is also evidence of the position of Slovakia as a reliable and responsible partner, which also calls for a more resolute implementation of political and economic reforms in the country.
“Unfortunately, the restoration of the Beirut port is progressing slowly. I saw the surrounding area devastated by this tragic explosion with my own eyes during my working visit to Lebanon in this May,” stated the State Secretary Brocková. The Slovak Republic supports Lebanon through several instruments of development aid. Among them, we could mention for instance the humanitarian projects to provide for the urgent needs of the most vulnerable groups of inhabitants, such as food, drinkable water, hygienic needs, shelters, as well as post-traumatic and psychological help.
The Slovak Republic was the only V4 country to attend the conference.
