Zimbabwe doctors strike over pay
London, 04.06.2007
Zimbabwe's junior state doctors have gone on strike for the second time in six months to press the government for higher wages. The stoppage is expected to have a further severe impact on hospitals, already hard-hit by hugely reduced numbers of staff turning up for work. The strike is reportedly being supported by general staff. Doctors say their pay has been eroded by Zimbabwe's economic crisis, where the rate of inflation is about 3,700%. "It's now in full swing, even general hands have joined in the strike," the head of the Hospital Doctors' Association, Amon Siveregi, told Reuters news agency. 'Damaging policies' Many nurses at state hospitals have not been turning up for their shifts, saying that their pay would not cover increased transport costs. The economic crisis has led to high unemployment, and fuel and food shortages across the nation. Critics have blamed President Robert Mugabe's policies, particularly the seizure of white-owned farms, for damaging the once self-sufficient country. Mr Mugabe, meanwhile, has accused foreign governments of trying to sabotage Zimbabwe's economy and topple him. odkaz na stránku
Robert Gabriel Mugabe KCB (born on February 21, 1924) is the President of Zimbabwe.[1] He has been the head of government in Zimbabwe since 1980, first as Prime Minister[2] and later as first executive President.

He rose to prominence in the 1970s when he led the Zimbabwe African National Union in guerrilla warfare against the white-dominated government of Rhodesia until the government accepted universal suffrage and black-majority rule. See also: Rhodesian Bush War

The Mugabe administration has been criticized around the world for corruption, suppression of political opposition, mishandling of land reform, economic mismanagement, and the deteriorating human rights situation in Zimbabwe. According to most analysts his administration's policies have led to economic collapse and massive starvation over the course of the last ten years. Currently, Zimbabwe has the highest inflation rate in the world[3], and is, according to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Africa's worst economic performer.[4]
