|
The US dictionary publisher Merriam-Webster announced on Monday that their 2022 word of the year is "gaslighting" — or as Merriam-Webster defines it,American dictionary calls term ‘a word for our time’ in an age of fake news, misinformation and conspiracy theories.Searches for the word on merriam-webster.com increased 1,740% in 2022 over the year before. But something else happened to make it word of the year. There wasn’t a single event that drove significant spikes in the searches, as it usually goes with the chosen word. The American dictionary’s top definition for gaslighting is the psychological manipulation of a person, usually over an extended period of time, that “causes the victim to question the validity of their own thoughts, perception of reality, or memories and typically leads to confusion, loss of confidence and self-esteem, uncertainty of one’s emotional or mental stability, and a dependency on the perpetrator”.
