Cage breeding of hens in Slovakia
Bratislava, 10.05.2023
Will Slovakia succeed in banning cage hen farming? Organisation Humánny pokrok or Humane progress recently published investigative footage from three Slovakian hen cage farms showing poor living conditions of the animals. There are currently 2.3 million hens living in Slovak cage farms, representing 75% of all hens in Slovak farms. Each hen in a cage takes up a space approximately the size of an A4 sheet of paper. Due to the lack of opportunities to express their natural needs, hens in cages go crazy, often attack each other and cannibalism occurs. Conservationists consider this unethical. The new proposed law aims to help the situation with more ethical and environmentally friendly bird keeping. Slovak National Council deputy Tomáš Šudík proposes to ban cage breeding of laying hens in Slovakia from 2029, which would introduce a five-year transition period for existing cage breeding.odkaz na stránku
