Parliament Nominates a New Vice Governor of the Central Bank
Bratislava, 29.06.2007
Viliam Ostrozlik is a step closer to becoming a vice governor of the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS). Parliament passed the government’s proposal for his appointment with 92 votes on Thursday; however, President Ivan Gasparovic will have the final say in this issue. Ostrozlik has been a NBS Bank Board member since March 1. Between August 2003 and February 2007 he occupied the post of chairman of the board of directors and director general of Privatbanka, and he previously worked for Vseobecna Uverova Banka. The central bank has been operating without a vice governor for monetary policy since March 27, 2006, when Elena Kohutikova’s term expired. The former cabinet led by Mikulas Dzurinda nominated the then-State Secretary for the Finance Ministry, Vladimir Tvaroska, to the post of NBS vice governor and parliament approved the nomination. However, President Ivan Gasparovic refused to appoint him to that post, since he believed that Mr. Tvaroska did not meet all qualification criteria set by law.
