Slovaks commute mainly to Germany for work
Bratislava, 07.10.2024
Almost 5% of all employed people in Slovakia regularly commute to work abroad. Last year, more than 116,000 Slovaks commuted to work in this way. Most people travel to Germany for work, followed by Austria and the Czech Republic. Slovaks most often work abroad in construction, hotel or care. This was pointed out by the Institute of Financial Policy (IFP) of the Ministry of Finance in the latest economic development monitor. A third of Slovaks working abroad travel to Germany for work. This is followed by Austria and the Czech Republic, where one in four and one in five workers outside Slovakia worked last year, the analysts explained. Most Slovaks have found employment abroad in the construction industry, which employs up to 40% of Slovak commuters. Slovaks also found job opportunities abroad in industry, care, hotel and gastronomy. In most countries, except Austria, mostly men go to work. Most of them come from the Prešov region, followed by the Košice and Žilina regions. Approximately the same number of women and men commute to Austria for work." The largest group of working Slovaks in Austria are caregivers. Up to two-thirds of them come from economically weaker regions: the Košice, Prešov and Banská Bystrica regions. Among Slovak caregivers in Austria, older people predominate, with more than half of them over 50 years old," said IFP analysts.odkaz na stránku
