Poverty threatens 17.6% of the population, the situation has been worsening since 2020
Bratislava, 17.10.2024
Last year, poverty threatened 17.6% of the population of Slovakia, which represents almost 943,000 people. Both the number and share of people at risk of poverty or social exclusion increased by 55,000 people or 1.1 percentage points year-on-year in 2023, with these numbers deteriorating since 2020. This was reported on Thursday by the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic. "In terms of development over time, poverty indicators in Slovakia declined until 2020, but since 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the increase in prices and inflation, the situation has been gradually deteriorating," the office explained. In Slovakia, approximately every sixth inhabitant faced poverty or social exclusion last year. According to the SO data, the number and proportion of the population at risk has been fundamentally different within the regions of Slovakia for a long time. The highest at-risk-of-poverty and social exclusion rate has long been in the Prešov Region, where 27.6% of the population faced poverty last year. The shares of people at risk of poverty above 20% were also recorded in the Banská Bystrica and Košice regions. odkaz na stránku
