Even after more than 30 years, East Germans are lagging far behind in terms of salaries |

Even after more than 30 years since reunification, salaries in the federal states of the former socialist Germany lag significantly behind those in other federal states. This was stated by the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB). According to the head of the DGB in the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Susanne Wiedemeyer, salaries in the former socialist GDR lag behind those in the federal states of the former GDR by almost a fifth. This was reported by the DPA news agency.
According to Wiedemeyer, this difference means that when comparing the salaries of East and West Germans, employees from the former GDR have been working for free since October 22. "In terms of salaries, reunification has still not taken place," Wiedemeyer said, referring to German reunification in 1990. According to her, the salary difference, which is about 800 euros per month, inevitably leads to frustration. "I understand why some East Germans feel like second-class citizens," she added.
The DGB analysed data from the German statistical office Destatis on average salaries in the federal states of East and West Germany. The 2023 survey showed that the gross average wage of full-time employees in East Germany was €3,563 per month, compared to €4,401 per month for the federal states of the former West Germany.
Stefan Körzell, a member of the DGB's Federal Executive Board, said that the economy in the eastern states had grown more strongly in recent years than in the western federal states, but that the wage growth rate of East Germans was below average. "This must change as soon as possible," he said.
The DGB called for an increase in the number of collective agreements in East Germany, which would allow wages to rise. Körzell added that in the East German federal states, only 44% of employees are subject to collective agreements. This is a significantly weaker percentage than in the West German federal states.
