The top 500 largest companies in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) overcame one of the most difficult years in terms of sales last year. They faced the lowest growth rate of gross domestic product (GDP) in the region this century, at 0.7%. This is according to Coface's current CEE TOP 500 ranking, which it announced on Wednesday.
"The CEE region faced unprecedented economic challenges last year, combined with high inflation and weakened consumer demand, which also affected the largest companies," said Jaroslaw Jaworski, CEO of Coface for Central and Eastern Europe, adding that despite this, many companies managed to maintain their turnover.
The total turnover of the region's top 500 companies increased by 2.5% to €1.1 trillion. Aggregate net profit decreased by -17.4% to 44.909 billion euros. In addition, these companies employed 2.4 million people, i.e. one percent more year-on-year. According to the ranking, the largest company in the CEE region was again the Polish oil and gas company PKN Orlen. At the same time, Poland also has the most represented companies in the ranking, as many as 187. Slovakia again has fewer representatives, namely 27. Volkswagen Slovakia returned to the top ten, specifically to eighth place. Other automotive companies at the top also recorded higher sales and were able to improve their positions.
Among the top companies in Slovakia, Kia Slovakia took second place, which improved year-on-year and reached the regional twenty with 15th place. The third largest Slovak representative is Slovnaft, which ranks 28th in the ranking. Slovenské elektrárne (40th place) is also a successful representative. The fifth place was taken by the Slovak Gas Industry (49th place overall).
