American investor wants to buy the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline |
Washington, 23.11.2024 |
|
American investor Stephen Lynch has asked the US government for permission to buy the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. Owning the pipeline would give the U.S. and Europeans the necessary leverage against Russia, he said, and would also ensure control over Europe's energy supply. This was reported by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) and the DPA agency.
Lynch, who worked in Moscow for two decades and generously supported Donald Trump during the presidential campaign, said he had asked the U.S. government for approval to bid for the Nord Stream 2 pipeline if it went up for auction as part of Swiss bankruptcy proceedings. Washington must approve negotiations with companies that are on the US sanctions list. The operator of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline is a subsidiary of Russia's Gazprom Nord Stream 2 AG, based in Switzerland.
Lynch told the WSJ that U.S. ownership of the pipeline will strengthen the U.S. position in negotiations with Russia to end the war in Ukraine and will also serve the long-term interests of the United States. "This is an extraordinary opportunity for Americans and Europeans to gain control of Europe's energy supply by the end of the fossil fuel era," Lynch added.
The pipeline was damaged in September 2022 when it and the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline were sabotaged. At the time, the WSJ reported that Ukrainians were behind the sabotage. While the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline transported gas from Russia along the bottom of the Baltic Sea to Germany before the damage, Nord Stream 2 did not have time to be put into operation. The reason was Russia's attack on Ukraine and sanctions from Western countries. However, even after the sabotage, it is still partially functional, as the explosion damaged only one of the two pipelines of the pipeline.odkaz na stránku |
