Slovak malting plants consumed more than 370,000 tons of barley last year
Trnava, 05.06.2025
Seven malting plants kept Slovakia at the top of the world ranking in 2024. After the first processing, more than 370,000 tons of malting-quality barley, primarily from Slovakia, were consumed to produce the most important Slovak food. More than 500 farmers in the country are engaged in the cultivation of this important cereal. This was stated by Vladimír Machalík, executive director of the Slovak Association of Beer and Malt Producers (SZVPS). However, according to him, malting plants have a problem with high energy prices. "Slovak malting plants, in cooperation with domestic growers, increased the production of Slovak malt by approximately two percent. The quality of last year's malting barley was at a good level. Domestic malting plants ensured the needs of Slovak breweries. The absolute majority of malt went to foreign breweries, but part of the production is also used by mills for flour mixtures for bakeries," said Machalík at the All-Slovak Field Days event in Selice. Malt is the most important Slovak export food after first processing. In 2024, almost 234,000 tons of malt were exported, which represents 83% of production. Slovak malting plants thus reduced the constantly growing balance of Slovakia's foreign trade in food by more than 153 million euros. The largest export markets were Poland, Austria, Slovenia and Hungary. However, consumers can also find Slovak malt in beers in Greece, Serbia and Vietnam. “Despite the growing competitive environment in 2025, we expect the growth trend in malt production in Slovakia to continue. Slovak malting plants produce world-class malt and do everything they can to ensure that Slovakia remains one of the most important malt exporters in the world. However, we are significantly experiencing a competitive disadvantage in extremely high energy prices, which are higher than in Western Europe. This is an area that the state must urgently address,” said Tomáš Ševčík, Chairman of the Malting Section of the SZVPS. Slovakia is among the top ten largest malt exporters in the world, and in 2024 it was in fifth place within the EU. The largest European and global exporter was France (1.1 million tons). It was followed within the EU by Belgium (989,000 tons), Germany (617,000 tons) and the Netherlands (357,000 tons). SZVPS unites beer and malt producers in Slovakia, producing 100% of the Slovak malt market and 96% of the Slovak beer market. It was established in 1991 and represents breweries and malthouses of all sizes, from small craft breweries to large industrial enterprises. odkaz na stránku
