Merz calls on EU to suspend global minimum tax after US exit
Berlin, 16.07.2025
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has called on the European Union (EU) to suspend the introduction of a global minimum corporate tax, arguing that the plan is no longer feasible without the participation of the United States. TASR reports this based on a DPA report. Merz said on Tuesday that continuing to introduce a minimum tax of 15% in Europe would disadvantage the continent's economy. "The Americans have withdrawn and this concept has no future," Merz said, adding that the issue would now be addressed by the federal government in Berlin. The minimum tax is part of a global corporate tax reform that has been approved by around 140 countries after years of debate. The aim is to ensure that large companies pay a fairer share of taxes. The tax is at different stages of implementation depending on the country and applies to multinationals with annual revenues of more than 750 million euros, regardless of where their profits are generated. However, the future of the policy has been called into question after President Donald Trump declared it unenforceable in the United States. Washington has argued that the global agreement infringes on its fiscal sovereignty. A recent compromise by the G7 (the world's seven richest economies) allows US companies to be exempt from the global minimum tax as long as they remain subject to their domestic tax regime. The U.S. Canada, which holds the G7 presidency, said the agreement still represents progress in the fight against profit shifting and tax evasion.odkaz na stránku
