If the EU wants to achieve lower tariffs, it must open its market |

The deadline for the United States to impose tariffs on its trading partners, set for August 1, is final and will not be extended, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on Sunday. He told the European Union (EU) that if it wants to achieve lower tariffs, it must open its markets to US exporters. TASR reports this based on reports from Reuters and AFP.
"No extensions, no further delays. On August 1, the tariffs will be imposed. They will be imposed. Customs authorities will start collecting the money," Lutnick told Fox News Sunday. According to him, there is a clear interest in the agreement from the European Commission (EC).
"The question is whether they will offer President Trump a sufficiently favorable agreement to make it worthwhile for him to waive the 30 percent tariffs he has imposed," Lutnick said, adding that Trump is trying to increase access to the European common market for US companies. The final decision will be up to the president, the US Commerce Secretary concluded.
According to European diplomats, the deal being negotiated by Brussels and Washington includes a basic tariff of around 15% on EU exports to the United States, with exemptions for critical sectors such as aircraft, timber and spirits other than wine. The EU would commit to increasing purchases of liquefied natural gas (LNG) and investing more in the US.
The EU has hit back with a series of new tariffs since Trump returned to the White House. It currently faces a 25% tariff on cars, a 50% tariff on steel and aluminium and a 10% flat tariff, which Washington has threatened to raise to 30% by August 1 if a trade deal is not reached.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will meet Trump in Scotland on Sunday. The talks are scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. CEST, according to the DPA news agency. Brussels has been negotiating with Washington for several weeks on a new trade deal to prevent Trump's announced increased tariffs from taking effect on August 1. The US president said on Friday (July 25) before flying to Scotland that the chance of reaching an agreement with the EU was around 50%, maybe even less.
