India likely to buy Russian oil despite Trump's threats |

India wants to continue buying oil from Russia despite threats from US President Donald Trump, who is threatening it with new tariffs. The AP reported this on Sunday night.
According to the AP, India's Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that India's relationship with Russia is "stable and time-tested" and should not be viewed through the prism of a third country. A government spokesman in New Delhi said on Friday that India's position on securing its energy needs is guided by the availability of oil in the markets and global circumstances.
India's position is a response to President Trump's warning that he intends to impose a 25 percent tariff on goods from India and an additional import tax due to India's purchases of Russian oil.
The threat came at a time when the US president is increasingly criticizing Russia for failing to reach an agreement on a ceasefire in Ukraine and has threatened new economic sanctions if progress is not made on this issue.
India was buying 68,000 barrels of oil per day from Russia in January 2022, but by June of that year, imports had increased to 1.12 million barrels per day. Daily imports peaked in May 2023 (2.15 million barrels per day) and have fluctuated since then.
Russian supplies at one point accounted for nearly 40 percent of India's imports, making Moscow India's largest oil supplier, PTI reported, citing data from data analytics firm Kpler.
India's daily oil consumption is estimated at around 5.5 million barrels, of which nearly 88 percent is covered by imports.
India used to buy most of its oil from the Middle East, but after the Russian military's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, India has increasingly turned to cheaper Russian oil, which the West has been avoiding due to sanctions imposed on Moscow.odkaz na stránku |
