ČD will deploy more modern trains to Slovakia, and is also preparing a large-scale lockout
Bratislava, 08.08.2025
Czech Railways (ČD) is preparing several changes with its new timetable, which will come into effect in mid-December. Some of them will also affect Slovakia, for example, on some international connections to Bratislava, the train category will change from EuroCity to railjet, which will mean greater comfort for passengers on more modern trains. In addition, Pendolino trains between Prague and Košice should return to their traditional route. This was announced on Thursday by ČD spokesman Petr Šťáhlavský, reports TASR in Prague. Czech Railways describes the railjet category as a brand of comfortable travel. It includes the complete Railjet units and the state-of-the-art ComfortJet. In the first half of 2026, ČD will have all 180 ordered cars in 20 sets of this latest unit. They want to expand it to lines to Germany, Slovakia and Hungary. "On some Metropolitan connections and on the Hungaria train, Railjet and ComfortJet complete units will be deployed. These connections will operate in the railjet category. This will distinguish them from the trains on which the classic sets of the Slovak company ZSSK will operate in 2026, which will continue to operate in the EuroCity category," the Czech carrier specified. Due to the planned extensive closures on the railway via Horná Lideč between the Czech Republic and Slovakia, the Valašský expres trains will terminate at Vsetín station from about mid-February until the end of the 2026 timetable. From there, replacement bus transport will be provided via Horná Lideč to Púchov or Žilina. Šťáhlavský also announced that the SC Pendolino Košičan trains will also return to their traditional route. “The return of the units to this interstate line should take place after the ongoing modernization of the trains (for example, the installation of a repeater for easier mobile signal reception) is completed and ETCS is approved for regular operation this fall,” the spokesman said. On the line from Prague to Ostrava, which continues on to Poland or Slovakia, large restaurant cars will be added to most EuroCity and InterCity trains and the train capacity will be increased by 40 seats. Other new features in the ČD timetable for next year will include the extension of the Czech train line to Villach in southern Austria, and they will run north to Copenhagen from May. Trains will also be added to the line to Hamburg, where they will be able to use their maximum speed of 230 km/h on a certain section.odkaz na stránku
