Bratislava, 13.08.2025 |

Low-cost airline Wizz Air will expand its base at M. R. Štefánik Airport from November 14, where it will place two Airbus A321neo aircraft. In the winter season, it will also open 12 new flights from Bratislava to Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, Serbia, Spain, Switzerland and Norway. This step will increase the number of passengers handled by approximately one million per year. This was stated on Wednesday at a press conference by Dušan Novota, CEO of M. R. Štefánik Airport in Bratislava, attended by representatives of the airline Wizz Air.
“The opening of the Wizz Air base represents a historic milestone for M. R. Štefánik Airport. The largest expansion of flights that we have managed to agree with the airline is a significant success and will bring a significant increase in the number of passengers from the current two million to three million per year in the coming years,” said Novota.
The airline will place two 239-seat aircraft at its base, which will enable it to transport almost a million passengers next year. This will expand travel options and the economic development of the airport. The new air routes will be Athens, Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga, Basel, Lamezia Terme, Naples, Palermo, Niš, Plovdiv, Varna and Oslo from mid-November and December. At the same time, from October 28 this year, the airline will also fly from Bratislava to Bucharest.
After 15 years, the connection with Switzerland will also be restored, as the last flight to Basel from Bratislava was in 2010. The airline will offer a total of 15 regular routes with current regular flights to Skopje and London-Luton. The new air routes are Romania, Serbia, Switzerland and Norway, which have not been regularly flown from Bratislava in recent years.
Novota added that the expansion of air routes will also have a positive impact on jobs, as the two new aircraft require approximately 27 to 30 people. The increase in passengers will also bring new job opportunities for Bratislava itself in the areas of transport, gastronomy and accommodation services.
“We are announcing the opening of a base in Bratislava, where we will place two modern Airbus A321neo aircraft. Today is an important milestone in the growth of Wizz Air in Slovakia. Improving Bratislava's air connectivity is part of our long-term strategy to expand our network of European destinations and offer low ticket prices,” concluded Mauro Peneda, CEO of Wizz Air Malta.
