The Swiss industry recorded a sharp decline in orders in the second quarter of 2025, even before the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump imposed high tariffs on the country. The Swiss industry association Swissmem announced this on Tuesday. According to DPA, orders in the period from April to June 2025 fell by 13.4% compared to the previous first quarter, the association based in Bern stated. The American tariffs on imports from Switzerland, set at 39%, only took effect on August 7. Therefore, they were not yet in force in the second quarter, but the threat of their introduction was already causing uncertainty. Swissmem noted that the main reason for the decline in orders in the second quarter was primarily weak demand in Asia. 'We are currently in a dangerous downward spiral, and the domino effect is exacerbated by American tariffs,' said Swissmem director Stefan Brupbacher. 'It is a dramatic situation for the affected companies, employees, and regions.
Data from Swissmem also showed that exports from Switzerland to the United States increased by 5.3% in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period last year, but in the second quarter, when the imposition of tariffs was already threatening, it fell by 3.1%. According to the association, for the entire first half of the year, Swiss goods exports decreased by 0.9%, primarily due to weak performance in Asia (-16.8%).Given the complicated business environment, almost a third (31%) of the 1400 surveyed members of the association want to relocate their business to the European Union (EU).The USA has imposed a 15% tariff on products from Germany and other EU countries.odkaz na stránku |
