A third of people cannot afford a vacation.
Bratislava, 28.08.2025
Approximately a third of the population in Slovakia cannot afford to go on a week-long vacation, while the European average stands at 27%. This is mainly due to high living costs, low purchasing power, and high inflation. However, the percentage of people who cannot afford to travel is decreasing over time. This was stated on Wednesday by experts from the company Finax. "The sharp rise in domestic prices during the observed period has primarily impacted this situation, reducing household disposable income, along with rising prices abroad. It is taking people longer to save for a vacation. A fundamental factor is also the lower level of economic development, which causes wages in Slovakia to be lower than abroad. The purchasing power of Slovaks is 15.3% lower than the average in the European Union. From this perspective, a vacation may indeed be an unattainable luxury for some," explained Linda Gáliková from the company.According to experts, the reason may also lie in the historical and cultural context. Given the predominantly rural nature of the country, Slovakia has, according to them, a shorter tradition of mass travel. For some social groups in the population, covering basic needs should be a priority over leisure activities. In the European ranking of countries, where residents have been unable to afford a week-long vacation in the last two years, Slovaks rank eighth. The worst positioned are the residents of Romania, Greece, Bulgaria, Hungary, Portugal, Spain, and Croatia. On the other hand, the best overall results have been achieved by countries like Iceland, Luxembourg, Sweden, and Norway."As for Slovakia, the good news is that this figure is improving over time. In 2014, almost half of the population could not afford a vacation. Although we have globally fared worse compared to other countries, today significantly more of our people can afford to travel than ten years ago," they added.odkaz na stránku
