ESG is not just about regulation, but also about the resilience of companies.
Bratislava, 24.09.2025
At a time when Slovakia is facing slowing economic growth, high energy costs, and geopolitical pressures, the discussion about the sustainability of ESG (Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance) is essential. This year, the European Commission simplified the conditions for companies, meaning that the obligation to report on ESG will only apply to a fraction of them. However, ESG is not just about regulation; it is about resilience, innovation, and long-term value creation, stated the chairwoman of the ESG committee of the chamber, Erika Vitálošová, during a conference organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Slovakia (AmCham Slovakia) on Tuesday."Companies that choose to act voluntarily and transparently will be better prepared to stand in the eyes of investors, customers, and employees," emphasized Vitálošová.Mária Makrovská, the director of the department for legislation and accounting methodology at the Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic, advised companies to set a vision and goals relevant to their business for 2026 and then direct their focus within ESG accordingly. In 2025, the European Commission introduced the so-called Omnibus package, which simplifies the requirements of the directive on corporate sustainability reporting. 'I would recommend small companies to keep an eye on the Omnibus and subsequently the legislative process. Reporting is the tip of the iceberg. The main thing is for companies to approach sustainability as a competitive advantage,' added Makrovská. The Director of Urban Planning in Vienna, Thomas Madreiter, warned that the changes awaiting us due to the global climate crisis will bring transformations in company strategies. 'The key to addressing the global climate crisis is the active and intense participation of all stakeholders. Vienna can serve as an example, as it has focused on people-centered development for many years and supports environmental protection and sustainability,' he emphasized. The ESG conference also addressed current challenges faced by Slovakia and the region. Through discussions and workshops, it offered solutions that will help companies turn regulatory and geopolitical pressures into opportunities for innovation and long-term resilience.odkaz na stránku
