Vučić: Russians do not want to sell their stake in NIS
Zagreb, 03.12.2025
Serbian oil company NIS has not received a license from US authorities to continue operations, Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said on Tuesday, adding that the Russians do not want to sell their stake in the company. TASR writes about this according to the Hina agency. The NIS refinery in Pancevo has been without oil supplies for processing since October 9, when US Treasury sanctions over the war in Ukraine came into effect. Russian companies have a majority stake in NIS - Gazprom Neft about 44 percent and St. Petersburg-based Intelligence Co. Ltd. about 11 percent. About a third is owned by the Serbian state and the rest by minority shareholders. Vučić confirmed on Tuesday that permission to stop operations had been granted because the refinery's facilities are currently in the system maintenance phase. Fuel supplies to gas stations in Serbia also remain normal for now. Croatia's JANAF, the operator of the Adriatic pipeline, has stopped supplying oil to Pančevo due to US sanctions, as NIS is still part of the Russian energy sector. Negotiations on the possibility of selling the majority Russian stake have not yet led to an agreement. Vučić stressed that it is clear that the Russians do not want to sell their stake, and reiterated that "this is not about money, but about politics." He added that Croatia's JANAF, the operator of the Adriatic pipeline, "did not allow Serbia to import oil that was not intended for the Pančevo refinery, but for strategic reserves." "We do not have a gas supply contract. If we do not reach one by Friday, we will start negotiations elsewhere and procure it from another source - the funds are secured," Vučić told reporters after a meeting with teams responsible for the country's energy stability and security. Serbia's long-term gas supply contract with Russia expires at the end of this year.odkaz na stránku
