| Crop yields per hectare in 2025 surprised |
| Bratislava, 27.12.2025 |
 |
| This year's crop harvests were a surprise. The original expectations of growers were based on the development of the weather in the spring, which did not indicate a favorable growing year. The per hectare yields of cereals and oilseeds were ultimately a pleasant surprise. This was reported to TASR by Jana Holéciová, a spokeswoman for the Slovak Agricultural and Food Chamber (SPPK).
"The harvest was very demanding, lengthy, but in the end it turned out better than last year, but also better than the average for the last five years. It pleasantly surprised with the amount of grain harvested, but it disappointed some growers, especially with the quality of food wheat," she specified.
She pointed out that Slovakia will remain self-sufficient in the production of dense cereals and rapeseed after this year, and part of the harvest will be exported. According to Holeciová, the harvest results for SPPK members were higher for all types of cereals (including oats, rye and triticale), as well as for rapeseed compared to last year, and also compared to the five-year average.
"We recorded a record world harvest of oilseeds, but its distribution was affected by disputes between Canada and China and also China and the USA regarding customs policy. We have not yet felt the impact on the price, but the threat is hanging in the air. In the competition of wheat exporters, the EU is getting the short end of the stick and the pressure on the price of wheat is increasing," she added.
She recalled that the weather in 2025 was more favorable than a year ago for sugar beet. Most of the factors that significantly affect the final harvest depended on this. The sugar beet sowing for sugar production in the 2025/2026 campaign was at the level of 19,200 hectares. "Sugar beet growers will deliver approximately 1.3 million tons of sugar beet to our two sugar factories for processing, from which, according to preliminary estimates, we will produce about 175,000 tons of sugar, which will ensure 100% self-sufficiency in this commodity for our residents this season," she noted.
Holéciová added that the season was also successful in the case of Slovak fruit or potatoes. "There were significantly more of these in other EU countries," concluded the SPPK spokeswoman.odkaz na stránku |
