| European Route 66 to help Slovak tourism |
| Bratislava, 13.05.2026 |
 |
| The Ministry of Tourism and Sports (MCRŠ) of the Slovak Republic is participating in the project of the European Route 66, which runs from the Baltic Sea in Poland through Slovakia and Hungary to the Adriatic Sea in Croatia. The aim is to support tourism and a "travel passport" with discounts on accommodation, attractions and food should also be included. This was announced at a press conference on Tuesday by the head of the ministry, Rudolf Huliak (independent).
"I also call on everyone who will be along this route to join this important project and help us make Slovakia visible abroad in this way," said the minister. The initiator of the project is Slovakia, but according to the minister, Poland and Hungary also agreed to the idea. The ministry is still negotiating with Croatia.
On Saturday (16 May), a ceremonial handover of the baton to the Hungarian side is to take place via a motorcycle column from Lopej to Šahy. The Polish side should join on 12 June. "We want to bring people here, we want to bring tourists here, we want to increase the number of overnight stays and we have something to offer them. On our part of the European Route 66 we have castles, chateaux, spas, caves, the High Tatras," said Juraj Smrečan, president of the European Route 66 Association.
The state-owned company Tipos provided 100,000 euros to promote the project. Smrečan specified that most of the funds were used for promotional boards in the villages on the southern side of the road, and boards will be added on the northern side later. According to Smrečan, it would help if the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic were also involved in the project and the road was also marked horizontally. Smrečan has received a promise from the Ministry of Transport of the Slovak Republic that the roads will be improved.
The Slovak Police Motorcycle Club has also joined the project, whose task is to survey the road, supplement the markings and coordinate with the Polish side, where the police motorcycle club has also been involved.
According to the association's website, Slovak Route 66 runs through four self-governing regions and eight districts from the town of Šahy on the Hungarian border to Tatranská Javorina - Podspádov on the Polish border and a virtual branch to Liptovský Mikuláš.
