| Austrian company OMV has started gas extraction from the Wittau field near Vienna |

| Austrian energy company OMV on Monday began extracting natural gas from a field near Vienna that could double Austria's domestic gas production. Chancellor Christian Stocker said the Wittau field, located east of the Austrian capital, was of strategic importance. Deliveries from the field are due to begin this coming winter. TASR reported this based on a report by the DPA agency.
Alfred Stern, CEO of oil and gas company OMV, said that extracting gas from the new field did not conflict with the goal of decarbonizing the economy. The transformation of the energy and heat economy requires reliability and transitional solutions.
According to OMV, the discovery of the Wittau field is the largest gas discovery in Austria in the past 40 years. Approximately 28 million barrels of oil equivalent can be extracted from the field at a depth of 5,000 meters. The discovery will extend gas production in Austria by 15 years. The country covers approximately 7% of its gas consumption with domestic sources.
