| EP approves revision of EU rules on roadworthiness tests for cars |
| EU, 21.05.2026 |
 |
| MEPs approved the start of negotiations with the EU Council (member states) on the revision of EU rules on periodic roadworthiness tests and roadside inspections of motor vehicles in Strasbourg on Thursday. TASR's rapporteur reports.
The resolution, which was passed by 369 votes to 126, with 84 abstentions, means the EP will proceed to the next stage of the legislative process to review the requirements for periodic roadworthiness tests.
As part of the confirmed mandate, MEPs are in favour of giving drivers more ways to check their vehicles, but do not support the move to shorten the intervals between roadworthiness tests for cars and vans older than ten years from every two years to every year.
To combat odometer fraud and tampering with the used car market, MEPs backed a requirement for repair shops to record data from the speedometers of vehicles and vans and for manufacturers to record data from connected vehicles in a national database. However, to avoid unnecessary administrative burdens for small and medium-sized businesses, MEPs want this requirement to only apply if the repair takes more than one hour.
Lawmakers agree that roadside checks should check cars, motorcycles, vans, trucks and buses for their polluting emissions and require vehicles with potentially high emissions to undergo additional technical checks.
German MEP and rapporteur on the matter Jens Gieseke will lead the MEP's negotiating team in negotiations with member states.
In 2025, the European Commission presented a package of legislative measures on the technical condition of vehicles, which aims to update minimum standards for vehicle inspections, vehicle registration documents and roadside checks. MEPs already confirmed their position on one part of the package, vehicle registration documents, in April.
