The interconnectedness of electricity markets requires better risk management
Bratislava, 17.08.2026
Energy prices change very quickly, and are influenced by weather conditions, geopolitical developments, legislative changes and the current level of electricity production. The high interconnectedness of markets also means that any fluctuations spread significantly faster than in the past. This is according to an analysis by the Network Industry Regulatory Authority (ÚRSO), which sees the solution to this situation in dividing the European market into smaller regional markets. “Regional markets would better take into account the conditions in individual countries and reduce the risk that a decision by one state will raise prices for all others. The wholesale price of electricity in Slovakia is approximately 35% higher than the average of the monitored European markets, which points to the persistent price disadvantage of the Slovak market compared to most EU member states,” says ÚRSO. According to the analysis, prices are also affected by emission allowances. When their price increases, the costs of electricity production from coal and gas also increase. Sometimes allowances push prices up, even when gas becomes cheaper. According to the authority, it would therefore be appropriate to ensure that the emission quota system does not distort electricity prices and does not harm the industry. The market has also been affected by a change in the trading frequency. From autumn 2025, trading will take place every 15 minutes, which, according to the analysis, will result in a greater number of trades and traded electricity. At the same time, with shorter intervals, market participants can see more precisely when the sun is shining and when it is not, which, according to the ÚRSO, makes very low or even negative prices appear more often. In the area of natural gas, the analysis showed that after the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine was stopped, Europe reoriented to LNG and new routes. Supplies may be safer, but prices are higher and more volatile. Slovakia is connected to the European market, so according to the regulator, it will feel every price shock in Europe. The ÚRSO analysis also pointed out the importance of further developing cross-border interconnections, energy storage, flexibility of the electricity system, but also the need for each EU member state to have enough of its own stable production resources. odkaz na stránku
