| The Netherlands accounts for seven percent of global exports of AI-related goods. The annual export value of more than 80 billion euros places it in 11th place in the world. According to the NL Times, the Netherlands relies primarily on chip manufacturing equipment and its logistics function. Thanks to ASML, the country is the world's largest exporter of semiconductor manufacturing machines.
In addition, the Netherlands also plays an important logistical role in the re-export of routers and network switches, according to the Atradius report, which also warns that the global market is "highly concentrated".
Asian economies account for 65% of exports of AI-related equipment. Moreover, the top 15 exporting countries account for 90% of global exports. Europe remains dependent on a small number of countries in Asia and the United States for many key components.
“Right now, as AI is rapidly developing, this concentration makes the supply value chain more vulnerable to geopolitical tensions and trade disruptions,” said Theo Smid, an economist at Atradius. He said it was therefore crucial for Europe to reduce dependence wherever possible and strengthen its own position in key parts of the AI value chain. “This can be achieved by diversifying suppliers and investing in European technological capabilities,” he said.
The development and application of AI requires a range of goods, including raw materials, processors, memory chips, servers, networking equipment and chip-making machines. Global exports of AI-related goods were worth more than €2.9 trillion in 2024, about three times more than a decade ago.
