| The coalition has agreed on a budget with a deficit of 4.94% of GDP. |

| On Friday, the coalition council agreed on a budget for the coming year featuring a deficit of 4.94% of gross domestic product (GDP). The agreement also includes the abolition of the transaction tax starting in 2028. Finance Minister Ladislav Kamenický (Smer-SD) announced the details following a meeting at the Government Office of the Slovak Republic.
"I would describe the entire budget as a compromise between what the state coffers can afford and the priorities of the individual coalition parties," he assessed, describing the approach taken by coalition partners as fair and constructive. He maintains that the current government will hand over public finances in better shape than it inherited them, with the deficit being approximately 1.5% of GDP lower than at the start of its term. At the same time, the budget complies with all fiscal rules set by the European Commission (EC).
Kamenický highlighted that there will be no increases in taxes or social security contributions next year, nor will funds intended for the public be cut. Although some reductions were made across individual ministries, they were not across-the-board cuts. "Funds were secured for energy relief measures for the coming year. We also found money for salary adjustments, as well as funding for drought relief and various transport projects," the minister noted, adding that he would present specific budget details after the government approves it. Individual coalition partners should communicate the specific priorities they successfully incorporated into the budget themselves.
In his view, the budget parameters must also be acceptable to financial markets. "We enjoy the confidence of financial markets and intend to maintain it. We are going to hand over a lower deficit than the one we inherited," Kamenický emphasized.
Regarding the transaction tax, he welcomed the agreement with the coalition party SNS to abolish it by December 31, 2027. "It is essentially their request that it be abolished in some way by the end of next year. I have said that the transaction tax is not a 'sacred cow' to me, but I must also point out that we simply need these funds for the coming year, given that we had to accommodate various demands from coalition partners and address certain upcoming priorities," the minister added.
