| Saková held talks in Prague on energy price compensation and gas supplies |
| Prag, 15.10.2026 |

| Slovakia requires affordable energy, the mitigation of high prices for the industrial sector, and reliable alternatives to Russian gas. On Tuesday (October 13) in Prague, Minister of Economy Denisa Saková (Hlas-SD) discussed these issues with European Commission representative Céline Gauer and Bulgarian Minister of Energy Iva Petrova. The discussions covered topics such as energy price compensation for industry, the impact of the REPowerEU plan, and cooperation in the nuclear energy sector, the Slovak Ministry of Economy reported on Wednesday.
The primary focus of the talks with European Commission representative Gauer was the issue of high energy prices, which are placing a burden on both the industrial sector and households. Consequently, Slovakia is advocating for short-term measures to alleviate costs for energy-intensive enterprises and has highlighted the impact of the Emissions Trading System (ETS) on electricity prices.
"Europe needs immediate, concrete solutions that will help lower energy prices and maintain the competitiveness of our industry. Slovak businesses cannot sustain high electricity costs in the long term, as these place them at a disadvantage compared to their competitors," Saková emphasized, noting that Slovakia is pushing for the temporary use of European funds to support compensation schemes for the industrial sector.
Discussions with Bulgarian Minister of Energy Petrova centered on the development of the so-called "Vertical Gas Corridor" and the utilization of LNG (liquefied natural gas) terminals in Greece. Through these, Slovakia could secure alternative natural gas supplies from Southern Europe. The importance of these routes is also growing due to the REPowerEU plan, under which Slovakia is losing its status as a transit country and ending up at the terminus of transport routes, without direct access to LNG. This entails higher transport costs, a loss of transit revenues, and the need to coordinate approaches regarding US sanctions on oil supplies.
At the same time, both countries explored opportunities for cooperation on the construction of new nuclear power units, planning to exchange experience regarding financing, state aid, and suppliers. Furthermore, Slovakia offered the Bulgarian side its expertise and experience in the field of nuclear facility decommissioning.
