Brussels, 12.11.2007
Brussels, November 11 (TASR-SLOVAKIA/correspondent) - Slovakia will preside over the Council of Europe as of Monday. The half-year chairmanship of the Ministers' Committee, an executive body of the Council of Europe, will pass to Slovakia from Serbia, while Slovenia will follow with its presidency after Slovakia from May 7, 2008. Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister Jan Kubis will take over the council's presidency from his Serbian counterpart Vuk Jeremic at an extraordinary Ministers' Committee meeting, at which 47 member countries will take part. Kubis, at the same time, will promulgate Slovakia's priorities. The priorities include bringing the European and international community closer to citizens, coordination of Council of Europe activities and its cooperation with other international organisations and integration groups, consolidation of the Council of Europe's human rights' protection system and support of basic values such as human rights, legal basis of a state and democracy. During its presidency, Slovakia also intends to organize a conference focused on the Roma issue, and it will try to increase the level of awareness about the council among Belarus citizens. There will take place various events during Slovakia's chairmanship, including the 8th Conference of Health Ministers between November 22-23 in Bratislava. There will also be a meeting of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly's Permanent Committee on November 23 in Bratislava. The Council of Europe was founded in 1949 with the aim to develop mutual and democratic principles in Europe on the basis of the European Agreement on Human Rights and other documents dealing with the protection of individuals. Slovakia became the council's 31st member in 1993. kol/tm/tb
