On Monday, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of the Slovak Republic Richard Takáč (Smer-SD) received the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of France to Slovakia, Nicolas Suran. They talked about deepening cooperation in the field of education and international agreements on trade in agricultural commodities. This was announced by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MPRV) of the Slovak Republic, Veronika Daničová.
"France is an important partner for us in the field of agriculture. I believe that deepening mutual cooperation in education, as well as international agreements on trade in agricultural commodities, can bring positives for both sides," said Takáč.
According to the minister, the priority of both countries is to protect the domestic market and high-quality agricultural production, especially with regard to the import of agricultural commodities and the situation after Ukraine's possible accession to the EU. Takáč emphasized that Slovakia is one of the three EU countries where there is a ban on the import of agricultural commodities from Ukraine. He added that the European market must be the same strict rules for Ukrainian farmers, primary producers and food processors as they apply to EU countries.
"Food security and food quality are paramount for Slovakia. It will be a common challenge for all member states to find a consensus that will protect domestic farmers and support their competitiveness," said Takáč. He added that it is also necessary to set fair rules on imports of agricultural commodities, including sugar, poultry and beef, from non-EU countries that are subject to international trade agreements.
The head of the agriculture ministry also highlighted the need to reduce bureaucracy and set a fair policy of direct payments, in which Slovak farmers are still at a disadvantage, according to him. Both sides also talked about possible cooperation within secondary vocational education.
