MPs approved changes to the toll collection system |
Bratislava, 28.11.2024 |

In the toll rates for heavy trucks, hauliers will also pay fees for carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and external costs associated with air pollution from traffic. This follows from the amendment to the Act on Toll Collection for the Use of Specified Road Sections, which was finally approved by the National Council (NR) of the Slovak Republic on Wednesday. The amendment introduces the European Eurovignette Directive, which changes the toll collection system.
It also includes a reduction in motor vehicle tax for heavy trucks over 12 tons. The main reason for adjusting its rates is the state's support for road hauliers in replacing tachographs. "In addition, it is proposed to reduce the tax rates for vehicles over 3.5 tons up to 12 tons, which in Slovakia also pay fees for the use of road infrastructure (tolls for the use of specified sections of motorways, expressways and class I roads)," the Ministry of Transport said in the explanatory report.
The change in rates does not apply to vehicles up to 3.5 tons, as they do not pay tolls, but vignettes with time validity. The amendment also unifies the adjustments to the tax rate according to the age of the vehicle equally for all types of vehicles up to 3.5 tons and over 3.5 tons.
At the same time, the deputies approved an amendment proposed by Ľubomír Vážný (Smer-SD), which also includes historic vehicles among the toll exemptions. There should be approximately 80 historic vehicles over 3.5 tons in the territory of the Slovak Republic, while vehicles up to this weight limit are currently exempt from paying the vignette. According to the coalition MP, such vehicles also rarely use motorways and expressways, so the income from toll collection is almost zero.Opposition MP Marek Lackovič (PS) proposed the creation of a system of discounts on toll rates and the associated introduction of a minimum discount for buses. The proposal, which aimed to prevent the increase in the price of road public transport, was rejected by the deputies.
The amendment will be effective from 1 January 2025. The exceptions are the provisions on the change in toll collection, which will not come into force until 1 July 2025.odkaz na stránku |
