| Russia has warned the United States against putting pressure on countries looking for an alternative to the U.S. dollar. Any U.S. attempt to force other countries to use the dollar would backfire, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday. TASR reports on the basis of a Reuters report.
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump said over the weekend that he would impose a 100 percent tariff on BRICS member states if they continue to engage in activities that threaten the position of the dollar. Trump was responding to the last BRICS summit, which took place at the end of October in Kazan, Russia, where member states also discussed strengthening their currencies and non-dollar transactions.The BRICS economic grouping was originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India and China. In 2010, South Africa joined, and this year the group expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Peskov, in response to a question about Trump's statements, said that the dollar is losing its attractiveness as a reserve currency in many countries, and this trend is gaining momentum. "More and more countries are switching to the use of national currencies in their trade and in foreign economic activities," Peskov said at a press conference in the Kremlin.
