Putin cancels requirement for buyers to pay for gas through Gazprombank |
Moscow, 06.12.2024 |
 |
Russian President Vladimir Putin has lifted the requirement that all buyers of Russian gas pay for supplies through Gazprombank, a presidential decree showed on Thursday. The US last month also added a state-controlled Russian lender to its sanctions list, which could block payments for Russian gas by European customers. TASR reports this based on reports from Reuters and TASS.
Putin issued a decree in March 2022 that forced buyers of Russian gas to pay for supplies through Gazprombank and in rubles.
But even after the publication of amendments to the decree on Thursday, it is not entirely clear how payments will be made. Russian authorities said they are working on ways to resolve the issue.
The pipeline is expected to transport around 15 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas through Ukraine in 2023. That is just 8% of the peak volume of Russian gas that flowed to Europe via various routes in 2018-2019.
Some countries, such as Turkey and Hungary, still buy large volumes of gas from Russia. Hungary has asked the United States to exempt Gazprombank from sanctions on payments for natural gas, saying they could negatively affect some U.S. allies. The U.S. sanctions require companies to end transactions with the Russian bank by December 20.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak told reporters at a press conference on Thursday that Moscow is resolving the issue of the form of payment for gas with European countries and Turkey. According to him, neither consumers nor suppliers are interested in stopping Russian gas supplies.
"We are all interested, consumers and suppliers, in continuing this cooperation," Novak said, adding that Russia is working to resolve this issue (the form of payment) with Hungary, Turkey and other countries that are consumers of Russian gas.
"I don't want to give you details, because this is a rather sensitive topic. But in general, it is true that it is being worked on. The Hungarian minister came, we discussed this issue," Novak added.
The US Treasury Department announced a new package of sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, which includes dozens of individuals and legal entities. The restrictions also affected Gazprombank, which was not previously sanctioned.odkaz na stránku |
