By concluding a historic trade and investment agreement with the countries of the Mercosur association, the EU is sending a signal to the whole world that it is possible to cooperate by reducing customs and trade barriers. This was stated by the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič in an interview with representatives of the Slovak media in Brussels.
In his new position in the EU executive at the end of last week, Šefčovič helped to conclude the process of negotiations that the EU had been conducting with Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay for over two decades.
He stressed that Slovaks, like all EU citizens, must realize that the EU is going to almost completely eliminate tariffs on almost 91 percent of products traded between these two largest trading blocs."For Slovakia, this means that when exporting cars to Mercosur - these exports currently represent around 200 million euros - customs duties will gradually drop from 35 percent to zero. If we talk about engineering products, optical equipment, plastics, there the customs duties are currently also above 20 percent and will also go to zero," he explained.
According to him, the total current volume of Slovak trade with Mercosur countries is around 350 million euros, while those customs duties, just like in all EU countries, will go to zero, which means significant annual financial savings.
"Overall, this represents a saving of four billion euros per year for the EU on customs duties alone. From this perspective, this is truly a historic agreement that has not only trade and economic significance, but also represents a strong geopolitical signaling element," the Slovak European Commissioner pointed out.
He specified that at a time when some of the world's major economies are planning to increase customs or trade barriers, the EU and the Mercosur countries have sent a strong signal that "we are on the path of reducing barriers, cooperation, increasing trade exchange, creating jobs and new investment opportunities for entrepreneurs," Šefčovič said.odkaz na stránku |
